#whoandwhyifollow on Twitter

Five coloured ducks following feet

David N Wilson put the call out to make December 2 2008 “Who I Follow On Twitter and Why Day”, and I thought it’d be cool to join in - even if I am a day ahead (or is that 3 hours late?). I blame the rotation of the Earth.

Check out #whoandwhyifollow to see what others are offering up in our devotion to the networking cause.

The Day

The “day” was created for a little self-reflection - for everyone to realise the depth of their networks, not just the breadth.

I’m incredibly picky about who I follow. Anal retentive comes to mind. It’s simply because I don’t want to clutter up my homepage with useless drivel - I want it all to be meaningful to me. So I’ve achieved a level of depth, and want to share the 3 tweeple that I think you should follow. I could suggest a few high fliers (@chrisbrogan, @stilgherrian, @gapingvoid spring to mind), but everyone should have those guys on follow anyway.

Nope! From the 33 people I currently follow, I’ve picked three that I enjoy hearing from. I want to give them their moment in the sun. The choices are oriented towards social media marketing, which is what I use Twitter to keep up with. In no particular order:

1. Heather Snodgrass / likeomg

Her Tumblr

I started following Heather after seeing @servantofchaos send a few messages her way, and I really enjoy hearing from her. She tweets a mix of business / pleasure. It’s not always insightful, but it’s always honest, and in the social media sphere, it’s hard to fake honesty. Every tweet is like a friend just sat down in the room and opened up.

2. Greg Verdino / gregverdino

His blog

Greg was a follow that I picked up from @chrisbrogan when I was chasing some solid PDFs. I’m glad I took the extra step of adding him to Twitter after downloading 4 & 20 Blog Posts(PDF). Again, there’s a personal honesty that I enjoy, but he also regularly tweets interesting tidbits about 2.0 and social media. A good resource to have in addition to some high fliers.

3. Laurel Papworth / silkcharm

Her blog

After thinking about the select group I follow, I realised that I’ve used @servantofchaos’s feed as the glue that binds a lot of my contacts together (just sent him a DM to say thanks!). That’s where Laurel came from. I find the information on her blog helpful, her tweets honest, relevant, and friendly, and she’s someone who takes the extra three steps required to gather information together and get it out to the masses.

I value honesty, so I believe that these tweeps are the real deal, and are true to their followers and their content.
